2009 Year In Review

It is hard to believe that the DFW SEC Fans group is completing it's first year of activities this next Thursday! A couple of us started talking about this group in Aug '08, we held our first board meeting in Nov '08, and then held our first official event in Jan '09. DFW SEC Fans has held or participated in quite a few activities over the course of the year, and I just wanted to take a moment and recap them.

  • January -- National Championship watch party for the Florida Gators. We took a corner of the room and turned it into the SEC section, and started meeting each other for the first time. Some of us cheered for Florida, while others cheered against Oklahoma. ;) (Personally, I enjoyed calling the Hogs!)
  • March -- SEC Tournament watch party where we got together and watched the Saturday games, pulling for our favorite teams, or at least those we disliked the least. ;)
  • April -- LSU opened up their yearly Crawfish Boil to DFW SEC Fans. It was a great day, with almost 900 in attendance. (Personally, I enjoyed helping serve the beer and getting those coonasses to say 'Go Hogs' for their beer.)
  • June -- College World Series watch parties to watch the Arkansas Razorbacks and the eventual National Champions, the LSU Tigers.
  • August -- Football Kick-Off Party where there was lots of fun to be had, with free pool, shuffle board, darts, door prizes, and more. Plus we introduced our new "The Biggest 12" T-Shirt, which has been recieved really well and helped spread the word about our group!
  • November -- We held a Food Drive for the North Texas Food Bank. Several hundred pounds of food was raised, helping to feed those in our local community.
  • December -- SEC Championship game watch party -- The game that we all recognize as the REAL National Championship game.
  • And of course, our monthly SEC Mixers. Each school was set to host a month, and we had participation from 11 out of the 12 local alumni / fan clubs. Attendance ranged from a low of about 30, to a high of about 120, while most months were around 50 people in attendance. And in most months, at least a small handful took the party well into the night as we enjoyed chatting with each other.

Personally (no, it is not about the Hogs!), I know I have met some very good friends this year through this group. We've had a lot of fun, and Some of us have started hanging out whenever possible. We hope this group has made a similar impact on more of you, and if it hasn't, well, then you need to get more involved. :)
